Meet Mehira Altayeb, She is a self-taught fashion designer who is famous for the way she creatively fuses traditional Sudanese fabrics with modern tailoring techniques. Her style is minimalistic yet innovative with her brand being known for the use of experimental colours and mixed prints.
She has her own fashion line and also produces accessories, jewellery and purses. She confirms that her father played a major role in defining her personal style. “My father travelled a lot all around Sudan during the recording of his famous TV program (popular photos). صور شعبية. These trips opened my mind and exposed me to the great diversity of Sudan. When we visited any tribe I was committed to wearing clothes like them to get an understanding of their culture. This is the spark that started my career in fashion.”
Mehira and her initiative (Rakeyzah Interactive Foundation) worked with the British Council in delivering the Creative Industries workshop to participants from various states around Sudan. The seven dayworkshop focused on developing the finishing capacity of creatives to deliver a high quality product to market. The workshop was followed by an exhibition at Rashid Diab Arts Centre for creatives to showcase the work created through the workshop.
